Keep the existing lock brand or model handy if you know it. New hardware must suit the actual door and preparation. Manufacturer instructions can specify door thickness, the position of the lock and hole sizes; the requirements vary by model. Ask the team what information it needs before ordering parts. You do not need to remove the lock or drill the door to make an initial inquiry.
Think about everyday use as well as appearance. Describe how household members operate the entrance, whether carrying items makes the current handle awkward, and whether you prefer to keep using a physical key. Ask to understand operation from both sides of the door. If a building or property manager sets hardware requirements, share those requirements before making a choice.
If you are considering a keypad or connected lock, bring the exact product model into the conversation. Confirm what the product needs for power, backup access and any app or network feature you intend to use. Product features and compatibility are model-specific.
